ZMC Hotels is proud to announce that the Lake Superior Binational Program’s 2014 Environmental Stewardship Awards Recipients for Outstanding Contributions to Protect and Restore the Lake Superior Basin were announced on Monday, July 21, 2014 and ZMC’s own Inn on Lake Superior tied for the Business category.
Award recipients have accomplished significant and successful actions that minimize negative impacts or restore the natural environment in the Lake Superior basin. The winners of this award have demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship through outstanding leadership and practice.
The Inn on Lake Superior switched to nonhazardous cleaning materials. Commercial cleaners can contain volatile organic compounds which harm the environment. Hotel staff voluntarily substitutes common commercial cleaners with Hydris through Ecolab thereby eliminating hazardous chemicals from their operations. The eco-friendly cleaner combines soft tap water, salt, and electricity to create a powerful toxin-free cleaner and sanitizer. The Inn on Lake Superior also has committed to using products made of recycled materials such as carpet pads, wall vinyl, and carpet in guest rooms.
ZMC Hotels and the Inn have been committed to being an environmental leader in Duluth for many years. The Inn continues to find or create new ways to stay eco-friendly as a business operating on the shores of Lake Superior. Guests and staff recycle all materials that can be recycled, limit waste by using dishes and silverware instead of disposable items, using recycled and/or biodegradable materials, and energy efficient equipment.
We are very proud to be able to contribute to the sustainability of our hotel and the region. Every little bit helps and we will continue to find more ways to help keep our environment strong and keep Lake Superior clean.
